The rest of the ad went on to explain that if the crews were too busy to fix the unit right then or if the repair would take longer than 2 hours, portable units would be brought in to cool the house at no extra charge until the repair was completed.

ONE race horse in Kranji was confirmed yesterday as having contracted the strangles disease.

However the good news is that tomorrow’s and Sunday’s racing will go ahead.

Two of trainer Brian Dean’s horses showed symptoms of strangles late last week and were immediately isolated. Subsequent tests were conducted on the two horses by the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) and the results of one of the horses proved positive.

The two horses were initially stabled together in an air- conditioned unit in the single story stables area commonly referred to as ‘the village’ and away from Dean’s main stables.

As a precaution the club has ordered that all horses under Dean’s care be isolated in their own stables and are barred from track work and racing until further notice.

As the two horses were stabled close to the yards of trainers Alvin Tan and Mok Zhan Lun, the same restrictions apply to their horses until further notice.

Tests will be conducted on all horses under the care of the three trainers. The results of these tests are expected within one week.

Visitors to all stables at the Singapore Turf Club will also not be allowed while the equine swimming pool has also been closed until further notice.

The club is also working closely with AVA to test horses for the disease.

Strangles is a highly contagious disease caused by bacteria which infect horses. It is characterised by severe inflammation of the mucosa of the head and throat, with extensive swelling and often rupture the lymph nodes, which produces large amounts of thick pus.

However, the club would like to stress that strangles is not fatal and once a horse fully recovers it is then, in 75 percent of cases, immune to the disease.

The club would also like to stress that strangles cannot be contracted by humans.
